Abstract
In June 1921, Winston Churchhill unveiled before Parliament his pan for supporting Sherif Husain, Amir of Mecca and two of his sons for rulership position in those middle Eastern countries recently liberated from Ottoman rule. By his so-called “Sherifian solution” Curchill hoped that support for King Husain in the Hijaz, Fasal as first ruler of mandatory Iraq and Abdullah as Amir of Transjordan would reconcile the demand of Arab Nationalists with Britain’s strategic and economic interests in the region.
This study traces the development of the Sherifian policy during the period 1920 – 25. That policy was devised by the British for the territories involved, with little regard for the wishes of the indigenous populations. therefore, while not ignoring the Arab perspective, this work places heavy reliance on the records of more than two dozen individuals in London and ‘on the spot’ who supported or oppose the policy.
After an introductory chapter treating generally Britain’s war-time Middle Eastern policies and the activities of the Sherifans, the individual cases of Fasal, Abdullah and Husain are considered in separate chapters. With regard to Fasal and Abdullah, the analysis concludes at that point at which Britain made a definitive commitment to Sherifian rule in Iraq and Transjordan. in the final CHAPTER, Britain’s policy of supporting Husain is considered and the reasons for the failure of the policy of supporting g the family as a whole are assessed in light of the collapse of Sherifian rule in the Hijaz. Despite that failure, the author concludes that, viewed in the context of the post-war Middle Eastern settlement. British sponsorship of Hashemite rule represented sound policy.
