Abstract
Sport touches the lives of probably every citizen in every state, whether as participants, observers or armchair supporters. To a large degree sport has become the focal point for the expression of national loyalty and pride and as an essential component of group identity. Competitions, such as Olympic Games and the soccer world cup, are turned by participants, the media and governments into major occasions for both symbolic and actual flag-waving. Within these larger issues of national identities are contained those concerning ethnic minority and immigrant groups.
This volume examines the ways in which sport shapes the experiences of various immigrant and minority groups and, in particular, looks at the relationship between sport, ethnic identity and ethnic relations.
