Abstract
Demoncratisation, Conflict Management and the Amnesty Question in Nigeria is seminal text in the discipline of peace and conflict studies as well as a manual for the Civil Defence Corps, and practitioners in general. The book is a timely intervention for the general reader and for a specialised audience, be they University scholars or instructors in the Peace Academy.
The Practice of Peace and Conflict Resolution, is an ancient and pristine endeavour which is crucial to the survival and cohesion of any society, be they in the Greek city-states of the 4th and 5th century B.C. or the new democracies of the 20th and 21st centuries. This itself is a clearly illustrated in the book. Whist this fact remains, we are aware that the theorization and study of Peace and Conflict is a modern academic discipline, and both scholars and practitioners have invaluable contribution to make.
The book succinctly introduces the history of the founding, inauguration and incorporation of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at the outbreak of the Nigeria Civil War. This is a history documentation which illustrates the Corps as a home-grown phenomenon of the Nigeria state.
it is worthy of note that the Amnesty programme initiated by former President Umaru Musa Yau’adua and ably continued by president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan receive scholarly attention in this book, as support for President Jonathan’s avowed commitment to disallow any lapse in the pursuit of the programme to its logical conclusion.
finally without making this an obstructive point, the book is a champion of post-colonial advocacy for new and emergent states in Africa to re-invent their own destinies in regard to their indigenous security needs and wants.
