Abstract
Until the construction of the inter-state highway system and the expansion of air travel in the 1950s and 1960s, railroads were America’s most important system of long-distance transportation. Railroad lines shaped the nation’s economy, helping to determine which cities and regions would flourish and which will not. They also shape residential patterns. Once people could commute by train to city workplaces, it was possible for them to live great distances from their jobs.
The unfinished nation, a concise survey of America’s history, is known for Alan Brinkley’s smooth narrative voice, impeccable scholarship and reliability, and a balanced presentation of the many areas of history competing for attention from scholars and teachers. In this third edition, Brinkley incorporates new coverage of technology and science as forces in history, significance new material on cultural history, and on popular culture in particular.
