Abstract
The study of military power has undergone a considerable renaissance over the last 30 years now that nuclear weapons have gone out of fashion, soldiers’ historians and political scientists alike have been concern to emphasize the utility and potential of armed conflict on land. Military writers once deemed old fashioned have return to favor, and the study of military operations has developed an entirely new dimension.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this renaissance has been the increased contribution made by the serving soldiers in writing about warfare on land. The great strength of this collection of ten studies is the combination of writing on military subjects, both by academics and by serving officers who have experience of developing, teaching and implementing the subjects on which they write. Quite frequently and uncomprehending gap has developed between the academics writing within universities and serving officers studying within their staff colleges. Clearly, soldiers have their own jargons like other professions. But here academics and senior military practitioners have been brought together, drawing from similar sources and working to the highest scholarly standards, but bringing their own perspectives to bear on complex military subjects.
The contributors of this book consider the multifarious aspect of the Anglo-American approach to war. The essays range from study of volunteer soldiering in the Mexican war of 1846-48, analyses of operation in the two world wars, to a reconsideration of the nature of future warfare. All the contributors are concerned to base their work on a thorough consideration of the overall historical context. They explore the relationship between theory and practice in military operations. a primary interest is reviewing the problems of transition from the small-scale duties of an imperial or frontier constabulary to coping with the demand of continental warfare. This recurring problem is a central feature of the Anglo-American military tradition. Throughout a major theme is the importance of peacetime in the mental preparation and training for war.
The book concludes with two surveys of the likely future of warfare. The first examine the influence of maneuver theory on operations other than war (formerly low intensity conflict), and the second presents a detail and stimulating analysis of the likely nature of the future battlefield up to 2025,. Military power: Land warfare in theory and practice makes a lively and original contribution to the study of land warfare.
