Sixty Years Long March Towards Democracy is the book on general elections conducted in Nigeria between 1951 and 201. It is a chronicle of events that characterised the organisation, and supervision of general elections that had been conducted twelve times t irregular intervals 1951, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1974, 1983, 1991/93, 19197, 1998/99, 2003, 2007 and 2011. The first four elections were conducted under the parliamentary systems of government while the rest were conducted under presidential system of government. The author participated as an Electoral Officer of Kontagora Federal Constituency in 1959 and as Chief Electoral Officer of the Federation of Nigeria, and Executive Secretary of Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO) during the 1979 General Election but exercise his civic right as a voter at other elections.
The book records the activities that occurred during these elections especially the 1959 and 1979 election during which the author played prominent roles. For other elections various sources and the author’s reminiscences provided material for writing the book which is a compendium of Nigeria electoral process for the sixty years. The book is recommended to academicians, scholars and the general reading public who may wish to learn about these electoral process and their aftermath.
