The focus of this book, which is a collection of original essays by some of
Nigeria’s leading social scientists and historians, is to connect with and critically examine the enduring security and development challenges of Africa in the 21st century. The 17 chapter publication engages in penetrating and in – depth diagnosis of the intractable problems of security and underdevelopment in Africa, and other offers constructive suggestions on the way African states can respond individually and collectively to the mounting challenges. It explores issues ranging from the contextual and historical background of Africa’s security and development challenges, to contemporary security issues, which plague and hold down the continent.
Among the topic explored include governance, political instability and civil wars, globalisation and its consequences for Africa’s security and development, the security implications of the new scramble for Africa and the fate of civilians in Africa’s violent conflict. The issue of food security which continues to haunt the continent, the problem of African University system and its relevance to local needs as well as the challenge of region development t are succinctly discussed in the book. The publication also reflects on Pan-Africa approaches to security issues and examine the African peace and security architecture.
