Abstract
At the inception of this administration we pledged to make this country a better place. We pledged to ensure that our nation remains a unity entity worthy of respect and capable of functioning as a viable and credible part of the international community .
We meant these statements in all their ramification. A new and more befitting capital city, devoid of the social and physical impediments of its predecessor but possessing the attributes of a modern Capital, is one manifestation of that pledge. We envisaged a capital that would symbolise the unity of Nigeria, enhance the efficiency of administration and take cognisance of the long-term development needs of a metropolitan centre.
Indeed these dreams has been dreamt by the administration of General Ramat Murtala Mohammed who set the machinery in motion. subsequent administration played a significant role in the implementation of Abuja dreams. This administration accelerated the velocity of motion culminating in moving the seat of power to Abuja on December 12,1991. This bilingual handbook which traces the historical development of Abuja is an eloquent demonstration of the fact that, with determination and popular co-operation,no task is beyond the resources of a nation.
The Directorate of the move met to Abuja in the Presidency and the entire staff deserve commendation for commissioning the publication of this bilingual handbook on Abuja.
I wish and hope that the handbook turns out to be an invaluable source of information to both indigenous and foreign investors, researchers and the general public.
Finally, it is my ardent that Nigerians and foreigners alike join the government in its efforts to develop Abuja to its highest potential so that both the federal capital city (FCC) and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) can grow to be the pride of not only Nigerian but Africans in diaspora.
it is my pleasure, therefore, to commend this Abuja bilingual handbook to both the Nigerian and the foreign reading public.
